「旧街道へ雨がやって来た」

作家のことば

　山間の鞍馬寺がある鞍馬街道。子供の頃、この街道の店に天狗のお面（確か紙粘土に着色）が柱に掛かっていたのを買ってもらった。面を着けると溜まらない臭いがした。数か月経っても臭った。それ以来着けることはなかった。あのお面、どこへ行ったやら。
　雨と物の怪、物語のプロローグが……。

The Kurama Kaidō, where Kurama-dera Temple is located in the mountains. When I was a child, my father bought me a Tengu mask (colored paper clay, I think) hanging on a pillar at a shop on this road. When I wore the mask, it had an unbearable smell. It still smelled months later. I never wore it again after that. I wonder what happened to that mask.
