漆黒のGnu

作家のことば

　艶のある黒い顔、まつ毛の奥にはうつろな目が覗く、体毛はまだらでしま模様、そして鋭い角がひかる。何故このような風貌の存在が生まれたのか。古代エジプトの神にNuという神々の父がいた。創造に先立つ混沌の原初の水を擬人化したものとして伝わっている。視覚、聴覚、嗅覚に優れたGnuは今日も水を求めて走り抜く。

A glossy black face, empty eyes peeking out from behind long eyelashes, mottled and striped fur, and sharp horns gleaming. Why was a being with such a countenance born? There was an Ancient Egyptian god named Nu, the father of the gods. He is said to be the personification of the primordial water of chaos that preceded creation. The Gnu, with its excellent sight, hearing, and smell, runs in search of water today.
