　達磨大師はインド南方の香至国王の三番目の子で、実在の人物です。蘆の葉に乗りインドから中国に揚子江を渡る姿が逸話として絵も多数残っています。魏の国に至り、少林寺で修行し、禅宗の祖として知られています。渡江達磨ともいいます。

Bodhidharma was the third son of King Sugandha of Southern India and is a historical figure. Many paintings remain of the anecdote where he crosses the Yangtze River from India to China on a reed leaf. He reached the Kingdom of Wei, trained at the Shaolin Temple, and is known as the founder of Zen Buddhism. He is also called "Crossing the River Bodhidharma."
