哀孤鴈

　晩秋、北方から渡ってくる雁。ただ一羽でつれのない雁を哀れむ。
　雁は遠方からの音信を伝える鳥との中国の故事（漢書）は、雁に托して遠方の人への思慕や、おのれの過ぎ去った人生を追懐する特別の意味づけがある。
　病雁の夜寒に落ちて旅寝かな（芭蕉）

Late autumn, wild geese flying in from the north. I sympathize with the lone, partnerless goose.
The Chinese anecdote (*Hanshu*) that wild geese are birds that convey distant messages gives the goose a special meaning, entrusting it with feelings of longing for distant people or a retrospective on one's own past life.
