春の野を焼く

毎年、二月下旬から三月にかけて大規模な野焼きが阿蘇で行われます。千二百年続くこの行事は大地の豊穣のためですが、その炎は黄金色の大地をみるみる黒に染めて阿蘇全体の空気を巻き込み、巻き上げて、恐ろしさも含みながら壮大な情景を見せてくれます。

Every year, from late February through March, a massive controlled burn takes place in Aso[cite: 1]. Practiced for 1,200 years to ensure the fertility of the land, the flames swiftly dye the golden landscape to pitch black, swirling up the very air of Aso in a scene both fearsome and breathtakingly grand[cite: 1].
